You have probably heard the name ‘Keaton Jones’ by now unless you’ve been living under a rock. Keaton, a young student from Knoxville, TE, revealed how he really felt being bullied at school and hundreds of Americans rallied to his defense. His heartfelt video went viral, spreading like wildfire across the Internet, prompting responses from celebrities like Katy Perry and Mark Ruffalo.
“They make fun of my nose. They call me ugly. They say I have no friends,” Keaton tearfully comments in the video recorded by Kimberly, his mother. She reportedly took the video after picking Keaton up from school to avoid lunchtime bullies. He goes on to explain how he is not the only one to get picked on at school. Other children are also teased and tormented in alarming ways. Despite his distress, Keaton concludes his discourse offering an encouraging message to all bullying victims, “…it’ll probably get better one day.”
The tearful plea of the 11-year-old boy struck a chord with millions of viewers including many famous faces from Chris Evans and Katy Perry, to Demi Lovato and Snoop Dogg. The viral video started out raising awareness around bullying and was linked to at least two GoFundMe accounts to support the Jones family. But soon the family was covered in a scandal after Kimberly’s Facebook photos of her holding a Confederate flag started circling.
Some speculated that she had told her son to use racial slurs against his peers. Many celebrities still supported the boy with heartwarming comments despite how troubled the accusations made them feel.
