Animals know how to express their appreciation in their own unique way. In fact, they might even do it better than humans. A typical gift from a cat to its owner comes after a lot of effort and is usually still alive! Cats love bringing live rodents and insects as “extra special” presents for their masters.
Many humans receive these gifts with confusion, not recognizing the cat’s effort to please. This was the case for Baloo. Ben explains that Baloo always looked so sad and dejected after her gifts were refused.
But Baloo being a smart and empathetic cat, quickly picked up on Ben’s displeasure with her gifts. She then decided to gift him something nicer, less alive.
“It took a couple of months of me rejecting her gifts for her to start bringing me leaves. They were always big, nice looking leaves,” explained Ben. “It was such a relief from the live mice every morning that I would show my gratitude by taking the leaf and playing with it while she sat on my chest. She knew she was doing something right now.”
Understanding that her new gift choice was acceptable, she strived to pick only the best leaves. Over time, Baloo has developed more ways of showing her affection. “She’s not a lap cat by any means, but when I’m upset or nervous she will hop up onto me, push me back so I lay down and then she’ll just sit on my chest purring like mad and nuzzling my face with her nose. She’s a very loving cat.” Ben explained in an interview with The Dodo.

Meet Baloo, the generous cat who loved to gift live gifts. She could not quite grasp Ben’s confusion when she brought him live rodents and birds
“She always looked so confused and sad after I rejected her live gifts, which made me feel bad”
So Baloo tried a different tactic
She noted that “After a while, it started getting a bit annoying having half dead animals dropped on your chest every morning.”
She came up with an unbeatable and very fascinating gift idea. Baloo chose something prettier than live rodents and birds
Her master plan was leaves. She would bring the nicest, biggest leaves every morning.
“It took a couple of months of me rejecting her live gifts for her to start bringing me leaves”
“They were always big, nice looking leaves”
She would occasionally switch it up with Twigs just to spice things up
But nowadays she’s found even lazier ways to show love to Ben
“When I’m upset or nervous she will hop up onto me, push me back so I lay down…”
“…and then she’ll just sit on my chest purring like mad and nuzzling my face with her nose”
