Siberian and Japanese Flying Squirrels Are Perhaps the Cutest Animals On The Planet

They might seem like stuffed animals, but these adorable creatures are actually flying squirrels.  Found in Japan and in Europe from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Coast, these furry Pteromyini are part of the category of Old World Squirrels.

No, they don’t actually fly. But they can catch some serious air by gliding thanks to a thin membrane, or patagium, that puffs out like wings as soon as they spread their front and rear legs. Did you know they can glide up to 100 meters to escape predators or just reach a neighboring tree?!

Everyone needs their beauty sleep and flying squirrels are no exception. Rather than hibernating in the winter, they can sometimes sleep for several consecutive days at a time.

Scroll down to view these little munchkins in all their glorious cuteness.
